The Wings Series - It Will Rankle

Picture
My goal with the Wings Series is to produce simple, fast-moving stories where readers can sit back and enjoy another time and place. But, I must admit that writing this series has been a challenge, and I have a suspicion it will rankle some people. If you have read any of my novels, they dip into various subjects, from technology to coffee, to poetry. This undoubtedly reflects a wandering mind. But the Wings Series goes in another direction, which makes it different.

First, these stories are shorter than classic novels, and honestly, it's not easy to pack a ton of action into a 17,000 thousand word, 90-minute read. The complexity increases when you set the plot in the future and add some exceptional urban fantasy characters. With those constraints, there's not much room for endless metaphors and literary embellishment. Wings must quickly get into action and stay there from beginning to end. And, that's done with tight description and dialogue, writing in the first person, present time.

Yet, there is another challenge at play having to do with underlying themes in the series: spiritual powers and the alignments under those powers. How do you fictionalize our reality, which is made up of the seen and unseen? How do you deal with final historical events, and what leads up to them, and what comes after? Many people shy away from these topics, and I understand why the Wings Series may take them out of their comfort zone. It's a reality to be avoided and denied.

For sure, some readers may not like the style or the storylines. We all have our literary preferences. But, there is a different dimension going on with the Wings Series. Stories touching on spirituality can rile up emotions. Maybe that's good? Let's see how it goes.

Fundamentally, my goal is to produce a fun reading experience where readers can escape to another world, but with some deeper undertones. I hope you take it that way and enjoy each release of the series.

With that background, the Wings Series is dedicated to the Gathering, the family of believers standing firm in the faith.
